Tuesday, May 4th, 2021

The state of Florida legalized the use of medical marijuana in 2016 by passing the Florida Medical Marijuana Legislation Initiative. In 2019, smoking medical marijuana also became legal.

Do you need marijuana to help ease the symptoms of your medical condition? You have to obtain a Florida medical marijuana card to purchase or possess marijuana. It does not permit the growth of medical marijuana at your home.

Read on to know the process to get your medical marijuana card in Florida.

Check if You Qualify

The first step is to check if you meet the required conditions. Only patients who have a medical condition or disease that falls in line with the state requirements are eligible to possess or purchase medical marijuana.

The health conditions that qualify for a marijuana medical card in Florida include:

  • Chronic pain
  • Epilepsy
  • Cancer
  • Glaucoma
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Multiple sclerosis or similar medical conditions

Additionally, to get a medical marijuana card in Florida, you must be a resident of Florida. Seasonal residents of Florida are also eligible.

Have A Medical Appointment

If you suffer from any qualified medical conditions, you have to make a medical appointment with an active, qualified physician.

The qualified physician must diagnose your medical condition. It is essential to receive a certificate from a specially licensed cannabis physician in Florida. They have the responsibility to follow Florida law and diagnose your condition.

You will only receive the certificate if the physician determines that medical marijuana would be the appropriate treatment for your medical condition. Once you receive this clearance from a qualified physician, you can go ahead and apply for your Florida medical marijuana card online.

Register with the OMMS (Office of Medical Marijuana Use)

After you receive your qualified doctor’s recommendation, you will receive a patient ID. Now, you have to register with the Office of Medical Marijuana Use (OMMS), Florida. It allows you to enter into the Medical Marijuana Use Registry of Florida. Only then can you receive your medical card for marijuana.

You can submit the application form online. You may also verify if your details that you provided to your physician are correct. The application form is relatively straightforward. Make sure to fill in all the relevant details accurately.

The application fee is $75. An additional processing fee of $2.75 is also charged. Once it is processed, you will receive a confirmation email.

Around 527,432 patients have registered in the Florida Office of Medical Marijuana Use, as of April 2021.

SubmitDocuments of Proof

It is essential to submit valid documents of proof to receive a medical marijuana card in Florida. You have to submit relevant documents along with your online application.

You need the following documents to get your medical card for marijuana:

  • Valid ID issued by the State: You can submit your driver’s license and state-produced identity card. You may also submit your United States of America Passport.
  • ProofofState Residency You may submit a document that bears your residence and name. It can be your utility bill, Medicare benefits statements, or your bank statement.
  • Passport Size Photos: You cannot submit photographs that are older than 30 days.
  • Medical Records: It includes physician’s diagnosis, medication list, treatment plan, lab test results, radiology/x-ray/MRI images. Medical records are not mandatory, but they can help your application.

Appointment of Caregiver

If you are not of legal age (18 years old) and have a qualifying medical condition, your physician denotes a need for a caregiver. It is the responsibility of your caregiver to manage your well-being while using medical marijuana.

Your caregiver must be 21 years of age or older. They cannot be your physician.

A caregiver has to fill a separate application form. You can submit it along with your application form. They need to provide identity proof and passport size photos as well.

Once you submit all the relevant documents, your application will be processed, and you will receive your medical marijuana card for Florida. You will then have access to purchase and possess medical marijuana.

Keep in mind that it is mandatory to attend all your follow-up appointments with your medical marijuana doctor in Florida. Once you receive your Florida medical marijuana card, you have to consult a certified doctor every seven months.

If you have any of the qualifying medical conditions, you are eligible to purchase and possess marijuana in Florida. Make sure to follow all the steps of the process accurately.
