hemp

Most people find it hard to distinguish cannabis, hemp, and marijuana. It is often thought that all three are the same thing. But, the truth is that each term differs from the other.

Cannabis is the name for all plants and hemp and marijuana are both parts of the cannabis plant, but hemp belongs only to the Cannabis Sativa family while marijuana belongs to either Cannabis Indica or Sativa species.

The cannabis plant is therefore a plant with hundreds of varieties inside it. Among the most popular ones are Cannabidiol (CBD) and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The latter is known for its psychoactive effects, i.e. creating the high feeling. Meanwhile, CBD does not have such an effect because it is mostly extracted from hemp, hence it contains less than 0.3 percent THC.

While CBD products are thriving in the market, many questions pop up whether CBD oil is the same as hemp oil?

The answer is No. Keep reading to learn more.

What Is Hemp Oil?

Hemp oil, otherwise known as hemp seed oil, is the oil extracted only from the seeds of hemp, mainly from industrial hemp. This oil does not contain CBD at all and has several benefits for human health because it is rich in omega, proteins, and Vitamin E.

What Is CBD Oil?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a compound deriving from the cannabis plant, most of the time from hemp. But, unlike hemp oil which is extracted only from hemp seeds, CBD is extracted from more parts of the plant such as the leaves, flowers, or stalks of hemp.

Hemp Oil and CBD Oil Similarities

Apart from the differences, hemp oil and CBD oil also have many similarities. The first is that they are both oils that derive from the same plant. Since they do not contain Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), both are non-intoxicating and can be used to improve many health conditions.

Hemp Oil and CBD Oil Differences

Companies often use the same name for both hemp and CBD products. But there is a key difference between them. They both derive from the cannabis plant, but each one is obtained from different parts of the plant. CBD is a new ingredient in the market, while hemp is known for a long time now.

Another difference between these two is that CBD can legally contain 3 percent THC, meanwhile, hemp oil does not contain any THC, and hence there are no restrictions at all in terms of production and distribution. Regarding CBD, some countries still apply laws on CBD related products.

Although both of them can be taken in different forms, hemp oil is mostly taken topically while CBD oil ingested.

Hemp Oil Benefits

Hemp seed oil is initially known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have suggested that omega 3 found in hemp oil would contribute to reducing inflammation, hence prevent heart diseases or even cancer. Hemp seed oil can be added to various products but can also be used directly on the skin.

Some of other hemp seed oil benefits include:

  • It contains GLA (gamma linolenic acid) which decreases inflammation during menopause
  • It is a good source of vitamins, proteins, and minerals
  • It is rich on magnesium, calcium, sulfur, iron, zinc and more
  •  It improves many skin disorders such as acne or eczema
  •   It alleviates PMS symptoms

CBD Oil Benefits

Although research on this interesting ingredient is continuing, CBD has resulted in an excellent ingredient in treating several conditions, both in humans and animals.

It is estimated that CBD helps to treat the following:

  • Acne
  •  Eczema
  •  Psoriasis
  • Seizures
  • Epilepsy
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Pain

How To Tell the Difference Between Hemp Oil and CBD Oil?

The best way to tell the difference is to read the contents of each product. For hemp oil, the package should have “hemp seed oil” listed as the active ingredient. While for CBD products, “cannabidiol” or CBD abbreviation should be listed.
