pain management

Since becoming legalized in 2018, CBD has revolutionized pain management and treating mental illness. Derived from cannabis, CBD offers the soothing effects of the plant without the hallucinogenic experience caused by THC (the psychoactive component of marijuana).

CBD comes in many forms, including oils and tinctures. If you’re new to CBD use, here’s what you need to know about the differences between CBD oil and CBD tinctures.

What Is CBD Oil?

CBD oil is made from the natural oil derived from hemp and mixed with a carrier oil, such as MCT. As the name implies, this form of CBD has an oily texture. While some find this texture unpleasant, others enjoy how well it blends into baked goods, smoothies, and other ingestible treats.

CBD oil also works well for topical applications and salves for targeted muscle and joint relief. For topical CBD solutions, find everything you need at The Helping Friendly Salve.

What is a CBD Tincture?

Like CBD oil, the focal point of this option is CBD oil derived from cannabis plants. Unlike the oil, it’s mixed with an (often flavored) alcohol base that makes it easier to ingest. A tincture might also be combined with other vitamins or additives to make it more appealing to consumers.

Shelf-Life

CBD tinctures have a longer shelf-life than CBD oils, as the alcohol acts as a preservative. This is an essential consideration for someone who doesn’t intend to use CBD daily. If your CBD oil goes foggy, this is an indicator that it’s past its best before date.

Taste

CBD tinctures often have sweeteners and artificial flavors added to make it more palatable. If the taste is a concern when it comes to oral consumption, consider using a tincture.

Efficacy

CBD tinctures are absorbed more effectively because of the alcohol base. When applied sublingually (under the tongue), a tincture will absorb faster than an oil. However, CBD oil is more potent and tends to have a higher ratio of CBD to the carrier oil. It also offers more versatility in application. In other words, you get more effects from less CBD oil in comparison to a tincture.

Price

The ratio of CBD in the oil is higher, and the carrier oil often has nourishing benefits, so CBD oil is more expensive. Tinctures are often more affordable because they’re effectively watered-down. It’s important to consider serving sizes and read labels when comparing options.

Which Is Right For You?

There’s no black and white answer when it comes to choosing between CBD oil and CBD tinctures. It ultimately depends on your preferred method of application and what works best with your goals and body.

Be sure to purchase your product from a reputable vendor who prioritizes transparency and shares testing labels. Be mindful that THC use is legal in some areas, and that it may be included in your CBD product.
It’s also wise to test a new CBD product while at home, where you can note how it impacts you and be better prepared to deal with adverse side-effects. For example, some people get upset stomachs when using CBD for the first time.
